Impressive fuel performance leads Harrisons Transport to repeat order of five more Volvo FH with I-Save trucks

Harrisons Transport has taken delivery of five new Volvo FH 460 with I-Save tractor units, equipped with Globetrotter XL cabs. The order was placed after the Preston- based business averaged 11 mpg with its first batch of Volvo’s ultra-efficient turbo compound engine trucks, which have been in service since 2019. Supplied by Neil Crook, Customer Solutions Manager at Thomas Hardie Commercials, two of the new 6×2 FHs will be paired with refrigerated trailers and used to move temperature- controlled products across the UK, while the other three will be used for container work.

Each of the trucks feature Volvo’s D13TC Euro-6 Step D engine, which benefits from turbo- compounding and additional fuel-saving features to reduce fuel consumption without compromising driveability – all whilst delivering an additional 300 Nm of low-down torque to boost journey times. Lee Harrison, Owner of Harrisons Transport, says: “The fuel returns we’ve seen from these Volvo turbo compound engines is very good. We originally took on eight back in 2019 and they’ve averaged around 11mpg, which we are very happy with.

“We work our trucks hard; the three on container duties will be covering around 130,000 km each year, and the two pulling reefers will be more towards 200,000 km per year with the drivers working four days on, four days off.” The I-Save package is designed to perform best in long-haul operations. As well as the turbo compound engine, the trucks use Volvo’s I-See predictive cruise control, which analyses and adapts to gradients in the road ahead – plus I-Cruise with I-Roll, which adjusts speed to optimise fuel consumption.

The five new trucks – all fleet additions – are backed with Volvo Gold Contracts to guarantee maximum uptime, with servicing and maintenance to be carried out at Thomas Hardie Commercials’ Preston depot. The Globetrotter XL Cabs are a major hit with Harrisons Transport’s team of hard-working drivers. Each has been specified with a Twin Bed Living package, with reclining lower bunk, luxury heated driver’s seat, 33-litre under-bunk mounted fridge / freezer, and audio and media package, including DAB radio and nine-inch side display with touchscreen.

The vehicles also come with Volvo’s Drive++ package to improve the working environment further.
