‘Serious’ crash closes section of busy North Yorkshire road

A ‘serious’ crash has closed a section of a busy North Yorkshire road with drivers urged to avoid the area. North Yorkshire Police issued an alert for motorists using the A64, which connects York and Scarborough, on Monday afternoon, January 3. Emergency services are currently on scene on what police have described as a ‘serious collision.’

The main route connects York and Scarborough and is likely to be busy with bank holiday drivers taking a trip out on the last day of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“Emergency services are currently dealing with a serious collision on the A64 near West Heslerton in Ryedale. “Motorists are urged to avoid the area until further notice or follow the diversions in place,” said a North Yorkshire Police spokesman. Traffic maps show the route is at a standstill near to the site of the collision.

According to AA Traffic the road is closed and vehicles are queueing on both sides of the carriageway.

“Road closed and queueing traffic due to accident on A64 both ways between West Lane and Station Road. Sensors are now showing that traffic isn’t passing through here. Detour in operation – for Coastliner Bus Service 843,” said AA Traffic.

The incident was first reported to emergency services at 1.22pm on Monday afternoon, January 3. North Yorkshire Police have also issued an update on a separate incident in the Ryedale area near Helmsley, North Yorkshire where a lorry has overturned. The force has again urged drivers to avoid the area.

“Motorists are urged to avoid the A170/B1257 between Helmsley and Sproxton in Ryedale after a lorry overturned. “Emergency services are dealing with the situation. Please avoid the area until further notice,” said a force spokesman.

AA Traffic reports the road is blocked due to a rolled over truck on the A170 near B1257 Low Street.

The incident was reported at 2.45pm on Monday, January 3.
