Snow expected across parts of northern England today, say forecasters

The Met Office have warned a short period of heavy snow could cause some temporary disruption on roads. Forecasters have issued a yellow weather warning between 11am and 3pm today.

Some roads and railways are likely to be affected, bringing longer journey times by road, bus and train services, Met Officials have said, with the worst of the snowfall likely to hit higher ground, such as the Peak District. Emily Atkinson19 February 2022 10:46

‘Intense rainfall’ over weekend sparks warnings from roadside network

Roadside networks have warned drivers to “keep their wits about them at all times” as an unsettled weekend of weather threatens further disruption to travel. RAC Breakdown spokesman Rod Dennis said: “Drivers will be glad to see the back of Storm Eunice but it looks like it will have a sting in its tail with conditions on the roads remaining challenging right through the weekend.

“With winds still strong and gusty, it’s important drivers don’t take any chances, so we urge them to slow down and leave plenty of space between themselves and the vehicle in front. “It’s not just strong winds that they’ll need to contend with – roads will turn slippery in the north on Saturday, while on Sunday intense rainfall becomes a feature making driving arduous. He added: “If conditions get particularly bad again, people should consider postponing their journeys, and for those who have to drive, it’s vital they keep their wits about them at all times.”

Big Jet TV attracts over 5 million views for Heathrow commentary

The streamer who shot to internet fame yesterday for his commentary of planes battling with high winds as they attempted to land at Heathrow Airport has said he attracted more than five million viewers. Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Jerry Dyer, who runs the YouTube channel Big Jet TV, said: “Yesterday, when the whole Storm Eunice, and prior to that Storm Dudley… I said in the morning…

I wonder if we can possibly reach 30,000 people watching live, as many as we did during Storm Ciara. “Every now and then you’d glance at the number of people watching and you’re like, 88,000 people…

105,000 people – it was just going mad. “At the end of the day we ended up with… normally we’d have about 100,000-plus views, and we had, from when I went to sleep last night, it was 5.5 million views.”

Mr Dyer said at one point there were 238,000 viewers watching live during the channel’s peak popularity on Friday. Today presenter Nick Robinson said: “They dream of that at GB News, I’ll tell you that. It was an extraordinary number of people watching.”

Two yellow weather warnings are in place for Saturday, with wintry showers expected to hit parts of Scotland and northwest England, while the southwest and south coast are likely to be battered by further strong winds. As large parts of the UK remain at a standstill this morning, the Met Office have said there is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected.
