Next time you can see the famous Flying Scotsman near Surrey
The legendary Flying Scotsman locomotive will be back in the south-east one more time during 2022, running along a route near Surrey for five days at the end of August this year. It will be running non-stop return services on the 11-mile Bluebell Railway between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead in West Sussex. Tickets for the journeys, which take place around bank holiday weekend on August 25 to 29, will be available from the Bluebell Railway’s website from May 1.
All seats must be pre-booked in advance. Visitors will also be able to see the locomotive on static display at Sheffield Park from August 17 to 24 and August 30 to September 5. Tickets for footplate viewings will also be available to book online.
The Flying Scotsman recently travelled through Surrey during a journey from London to Salisbury, passing through Staines, Virginia Water, Woking and Brookwood on March 24. It is not due in the county for the rest of the year, making the Sussex dates in August the best chance to see it nearby. : I went virtual reality gaming with my niece and nephew and they loved it
The famous locomotive isn’t the only piece of railway history to have been seen in our county recently. The 61306 Mayflower passed through the north of the county on April 5, while the 35028 Clan Line journeyed through much of Surrey last Friday (April 8), and one of our reporters was on hand to see it at Chertsey station. The planned August dates will be only the second time the Flying Scotsman has travelled on the Bluebell Railway.
Its previous trip in April 2017 was the first time the engine had visited the area in more than half a century. Flying Scotsman was named after the daily 10am London to Edinburgh rail route that it regularly ran. Coming into service in 1923, it was the first locomotive of the newly-formed London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).
Passengers riding the train in Sussex this summer will be among the first to see it after an overhaul that it is currently undergoing ahead of its centenary celebrations next year. The improvement work is focusing on its boiler and the required retube and recertification.
