Police applauded for seizing white van parked on pavement

Police have been applauded for seizing a white van parked on pavement by locals – but the driver has hit back. They voiced their anger at pavement parkers and told of the worst streets where this happens. A post was shared by West Yorkshire Police urging people not to park on pavements.

Police described it as irresponsible and dangerous and said a recent vehicle had been seized for blocking the footpath. LeedsLive reports that police had warned drivers not to carry on parking irresponsibility after an obstructive vehicle was seized. A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Please do not park your vehicle on the pavement.

“This type of parking is irresponsible and causes a danger to people using the pavements. Today, this van, parked on the pavement on Selby Road, Swillington Common, has been seized by the Police for causing an obstruction. You said we did.”

Many people applauded the police’s effort to tackle the growing problem. One said: “Good, there needs to be more vehicles confiscated. I have to use a mobility scooter to get around and it annoys me immensely when vehicles park on the pavement and I have to take my chances on the road.”

Another also commended the actions of police when he commented: “Its not often I say nice things about police but well done.

“I hate selfish drivers, they obviously don’t consider poor folk in wheelchairs and people with pushchairs.” While another also weighed in, when they responded: “This is great to read but is a constant issue with the multitude of irresponsible and inconsiderate drivers who have a driving licence. “It is really not right that people with young children, as well as those with disabilities, are forced to use the road if the pavement is not clear.”

Not everyone was so convinced that the current enforcement activity was fair. One argued: “Where do you expect workmen to park on that road if they can’t get on a drive? You’ll cause an accident if you have it on road, people bomb down it.

It’s hardly full of pedestrians.” The owner of the van in the photo that was confiscated by police responded to the post online and explained his reasons for having parked on the pavement. He said: “It’s actually my work van this is a joke I couldn’t fit it on my drive and someone was parked outside my house with their van parked just like mine.

“So I parked it as close to the side as I could and there was loads of room to walk round it easily enough room for a buggy or a wheel chair it’s not illegal to park on paths if you leave enough room for people to walk round there was no obstruction.

“The reason it has been there for a few days is because my own van was stolen on Thursday outside my gym and the keys were in it so it’s just going to cost me money for no reason.”
