Police stop man who had been driving 50 years without a licence

An uninsured flat-bed truck stopped by police was being driven by a man who had been driving for 50 years without a licence. The incident happened in Staffordshire on Monday- (April 4) and the man’s vehicle has been seized. Staffordshire police said on twitter that the man has been reported for driving without a licence and no insurance.

It means he has been on the roads since 1972 without the proper licence. The police force said the man, who is in his 70s and from Wolverhampton, was stopped at around 1.30pm on Monday (April 4) as he was about to drive on to the M6, the BBC said. The full tweet from Staffordshire Police’s dogs and armed response vehicle account, said: “Upon stopping this uninsured vehicle in the @SStaffsPolice area we discovered that its driver has been driving for 50 years with no licence!!… he has been reported and the vehicle has been seized.”

If driving without a licence for 50 years is bad, one motorist in January told police he had been driving for 72 years since he was 12. The elderly driver admitted he had been driving cars since the 1950s without a licence or insurance and had never had an accident in all those years. The man, aged in his 80s, was stopped by cops driving a blue Mini next to Tesco Extra in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire., on Wednesday January 26.

It is illegal to drive a vehicle on the road without at least third party insurance. Even if the vehicle itself is insured, if you’re not correctly insured to drive it you could get penalised. The police could give you a fixed penalty of GBP300 and six penalty points if you’re caught driving a vehicle you’re not insured to drive.

If the case goes to court you could get an unlimited fine and disqualified from driving.

The police also have the power to seize, and in some cases, destroy the vehicle that’s being driven uninsured.

If you are caught driving without the correct licence you could face a fine of up to GBP1,000, up to six points on your licence or you could be disqualified from driving.
