Yorkshire teacher infuriated by security after car stolen from shopping centre

A Yorkshire primary school teacher is “heartbroken” after her car was stolen just metres away from the doors to a huge shopping centre. Rachael Dunn, from Halifax, said security at the Trafford Centre in Manchester told her car thefts ‘happen all the time’ from the car park. Rachael has been left feeling like she’ll never get the car back.

Her and husband Simon had headed over to the shopping centre as a birthday treat during Rachael’s Easter holidays. They parked in the Upper Regent 1 car park for the shopping centre at about 1pm on Tuesday, April 12. : ‘Amazing’ 10-year-old can’t go to school or sleepovers without carer because rare syndrome could block her airways

They spent the afternoon birthday shopping and eating out, but were dismayed when they came out around 5.30pm to find their car missing, the Manchester Evening News reports. The couple have since said both the Trafford Centre and Greater Manchester Police ‘have yet to do anything’ to find the car worth thousands. Rachael, 43, told the MEN: “There wasn’t anything around to raise suspicion.

But we came back and our car was missing. We went to speak to security and they said ‘it happens every other day.’ Do you like shopping at The Trafford Centre?

“If cars are being stolen every other day from the Trafford Centre, what need to happen for someone to do something about it?” Racahel added that she didn’t think anything would be done unless the thievery started to affect the shopping centre’s income. The primary school teacher said she has been texted by Greater Manchester Police saying there will be ‘no further investigation’ and has had ‘no further contact’ from the Trafford Centre.

The Ford Fiesta ST was worth around GBP10,500 back in 2019 when Rachael bought it – and she feels like police are “doing nothing” to recover it. It ended up taking the couple four hours to get home with Rachael saying she was “heartbroken” after their lovely day was “ruined”.

She added: “The police aren’t bothered, the Trafford Centre isn’t bothered. I feel like nobody cares and nobody is going to stop [the thieves] – so customers are going to come out and be subjected to what we have been.

“These criminals have no morals, they don’t care about anybody else.” Greater Manchester Police were contacted by the MEN for comment. A spokesperson for the Trafford Centre said: “Our security team takes all customer complaints seriously and, when required, we assist Greater Manchester Police with any enquiries.

We have very little car theft on site thanks to our use of ANPR and camera patrols.”

The theft happened the same day another woman reported feeling uneasy in the Trafford Centre car park – Heather Dunn, 39, described another vehicle pulling up behind her and two men and a woman staring at her as she parked.

She reported the incident and ended up parking much further away.
