Road closed after crash involving horsebox on busy A171

Emergency services are dealing with a crash involving a horsebox on a busy route connecting Teesside with Whitby. North Yorkshire Police is advising drivers to avoid the A171 Guisborough Road, west of Whitby, following the crash earlier this afternoon. The incident, which is believed to involve a car and a horsebox, has happened between Skelder Road and Aislaby Lane.

Pictures circulating on social media appear to show a horsebox which has left the highway and crashed through a stone wall and into a field. A car also appears to have suffered serious damage to the front in the crash. : The ‘chaotic’ seaside town where residents are being driven out by ‘noisy, messy’ tourists

It is not clear how many vehicles are involved in the smash on Sunday afternoon or how many people are injured. There are reports that a vet has been called to the scene. The North Yorkshire Police tweet read: “Traffic alert – Whitby area.

Please avoid the A171 west of Whitby. There are road closures in the area while we deal with a collision. Thank you for your patience.”

The road is currently closed in both directions and there are long delays in the area as motorists find an alternative route. It is not known how long the road will be closed for. North Yorkshire Police and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
