People of Northampton rally around to help Ukrainian refugee schoolchildren
Northampton Town Council has been coordinating the collection of essential school items to send to Ukrainian children. The request came from the headteacher of a primary school in Poland which has welcomed increasing numbers of Ukrainian refugees into their school. Many of the children don’t have essential school equipment like pens, pencils, notebooks, pencil cases or school bags.
Schools, businesses and residents in Northampton have shown their “compassion and generosity” by donating many items. Stratford-upon-Avon Town Council has also joined up in collecting for the refugee children. Councillor Jane Birch said: “August 24 marked the anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from Russia, but many families have had to flee their homes and leave everything behind.

These donations of school items will go some way to help them settle into the new school year and to know that we are all wishing them well as they start to re-establish their education and learning.”
Goodwill Solutions in Northampton is sending regular trucks of medical supplies and food for Ukraine. They will be taking the school supplies on one of their scheduled trips and delivering the donations straight to the headteacher in Poland. You can also take your donations to Goodwill Solutions directly.
In the coming weeks, the council is encouraging schools to organise localised Stationery Donation Drives within their community. If you are interested in coordinating this and would like to know more, contact the council. All donations will make a difference so people are urged to help if they can.
