A world record could be broken when hundreds gather in a Manchester park

It might be time to grab your bedsheets and craft scissors because this weekend a Halloween-themed charity event will attempt to bring together the greatest number of people dressed as ghosts at Platt Fields Park in Manchester. In what is potentially the easiest Halloween ensemble to stitch together, participants have been asked to turn up with a white sheet with eye holes in it so they can attempt to break a Guinness world record. Paranormal Rescue who have organised the event have said it will start at 11am on Saturday, October 29.

Taking the record very seriously, the event will go ahead “no matter the weather” and should take no longer than an hour to complete. Though organisers have agreed that ghost costumes can be worn over the top of raincoats if the weather is “inclement” on the day. There are 999 spots available – so those interested are encouraged to book via the Eventbrite page.

Besides some Halloween fun, the event is also to aid the Greyhound Gap charity in Kidsgrove, and while tickets are free, people are being encouraged to give a small donation to the charity where they can.

Author Dr Brian Sterling-Vete, a Guinness World Record holder and founder of the unique Manchester-based international paranormal rescue organisation, said: “This will be a whole lot of fun and very simple to achieve. We would hope lots of Manchester Evening News reading dog lovers might get behind the bid.

“But it means that what is now needed is enough people participating to set the New Guinness World Record. We also need volunteers to act as stewards, adjudicators, official counters, security, first aiders (just in case), charity fundraisers, and general helpers.

“To date, I’ve produced and staged 13 world record events. The last was in Cadiz, Spain in 2005. I did that for Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals and at the Spanish event, we smashed two world plate spinning records.

“The objective in Manchester is to set a new world record. The other target is to raise funds to aid the dog rescue charity, The Greyhound Gap, which primarily rescues greyhounds and sighthounds, but if you visit you will see that they help to rescue dogs of various breeds, and the staff even help to find lost and stolen dogs too.” Brian and his partner Helen Renee, who featured on ITV’s This Morning with their ghostbusting greyhound, Bond, say their dog is Manchester’s equivalent of a real-life Scooby-Doo, and all three will be in attendance on the day.
