Surrey dad wants to create garden fence out of doors

A Chiddingfold dad has asked for the public’s help to create a more environmentally-friendly way to decorate his garden. Steve Punter, 48, was getting bored of the identical wooden fencing which surrounds his garden so has come up with an outside-the-box solution to the problem. Rather than uniform brown fencing he wants to install more than a dozen doors in one corner of his garden as part of a creation he calls a “doorfence”.

Having found a couple of doors in a nearby skip he got permission to use, he has now got a total of 12 doors as part of his project, relying on donations from neighbours to do so. “Fences are so boring, they’re using fresh wood all the time so it’s not very eco-friendly,” Mr Punter said. “There’s existing wood out there in the form of doors so I said the idea to my wife (Fiona, 49) and she said ‘let’s have a think about it’. “We went out for a walk and within 200 metres a neighbour had a skip on their driveways with two doors. I put a couple of posts on social media and people seemed to be very eager to get rid of their unwanted doors. It’s surprising how many of them are sat in garages or about to be thrown away in our little village.

“These are perfectly good bits of wood and they’ll look quite eclectic, the kids can paint them, it’s quite organic. Some people think it’s ridiculous, my dad said so, but we’ll see.”

The dad-of-two, who works as managing director of high-end food processors Magimix UK, is waiting to pick up an additional four doors as part of his project, capping the number he put in at 16. Once he has all the doors he will work out what combination to place them in his garden in the spring of next year, so he can get all of his family involved including daughter Izzy, 16, and son Charlie, 12.

He added: “I wanted something visually interesting, instant and, to be honest, cheap and cheerful. The prices of everything are so expensive it’s a waste of materials when you’ve got other materials in the skip every day. “I’ve really enjoyed the experience.

I’ve had to borrow a friend’s truck and visit people’s houses who’ve complimented me on what I’m doing. We’re all guilty of buying new when there are lots of alternatives. Whether it works or not I don’t know!”
