What do you think about Salford’s cycling roundabout?

This month has seen a ‘first-of-its-kind’ roundabout for cyclists open up in Salford, with the four entrance structure appearing on the junction between Broadway and Trafford Road. The roundabout is part of a road improvement scheme which has also seen a mile of segregated cycle lane added, as well as new crossings and signals. With this latest development of cycling infrastructure in Manchester, we want to know if you’re a fan of this unique roundabout.

Salford City Council said that the new structure, which joins up existing segregated cycle lanes, had been developed following “extensive consultation with members of the public, cyclists and groups representing people with a wide range of disabilities and visual impairment.” However, some readers felt that focus needed to elsewhere, with one person responding: “A bit over-engineered and unnecessary – why do come they come up with this stuff while most of us are waiting years and years for basic segregated bike lanes on major routes to be built.” Another reader also asked for more segregated lanes elsewhere, saying: “We need segregated cycle lanes on the major roads.

These cycle lanes can be on pavements usually. If more people cycle for local journeys then there will be less congestion for cars and trucks.” Others had mixed views, with one person replying: “It’s a good idea in theory but obvious designed by someone who doesn’t ride a bike.

The roundabout is far too tight to comfortably cycle around.” Some felt on the more cynical side about the development, with one reader simply responding: “Waste of money.” Are you happy to see new cycling infrastructure on roads?
