One person was rushed to hospital following a huge crash on the A12 in Essex yesterday evening (March 30). Eight vehicles were involved in a serious collision on the A12 northbound at around 4.30pm near Kelvedon, including two lorries that had jackknifed across the road.

A spokesperson from the East of England Ambulance Service said to EssexLive today (March 31): “We were called at 4.21pm on Thursday 30th March to a road traffic collision involving multiple vehicles on the northbound A12 near Feering.

“An ambulance, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), two ambulance officers, a rapid response vehicle and a response car from the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the scene. One patient was transported to Colchester General Hospital for treatment.”

A National Highways spokesperson tweeted shortly before 5pm: “The A12 in Essex is closed northbound between J23 (Kelvedon south) and J24 (Kelvedon north) due to a collision involving two cars and a lorry. Essex Police are among the emergency services in attendance. National Highways contractors will also be attending to assist with traffic management.”

Essex Police also warned that the northbound carriageway was expected to remain closed for several hours. The road reopened at around 10pm, following significant recovery and clear-up work.

An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Crews are currently at the scene of a large road traffic collision on the A12, Feering Northbound. “Firefighters were called to reports of a multi-vehicle collision at 4:27pm. On arrival, crews reported eight vehicles had collided including four HGVs.

“Several of the HGVs have jackknifed and are blocking the road. Nobody was trapped inside their vehicles and crews have been working alongside partners to recover the vehicles.”
