Cornish farmers’ market named best in the UK

A farmers’ market in Cornwall has topped a list of the best in the UK in an article in The Times. The Truro market was celebrated as displaying the pick of local produce.

Truro Farmers’ Market, which meets every Wednesday and Saturday on Lemon Quay, was featured in the Number One spot online and in print in the national newspaper’s ‘The best farmers’ markets in the UK’ article over the weekend.

It topped a list featuring markets in Winchester, Cumbria, Edinburgh, Clapham, Stroud, Manchester, Glasgow and Tavistock.

The article stated: “Given the natural larder at hand, it’s no surprise that Cornwall’s restaurant scene is renowned. Truro Farmers’ Market displays the pick of the local produce: net-fresh crab caught by local fishmonger Chris Bean, Cornish sea salt made in traditional clay pots, free-range bronze turkeys reared at Treway Farm). When the stalls have been folded away, wander to the waterfall in flower-filled Victoria Gardens before getting cosy at Nancarrow Farm, a rustic retreat tucked in 100 acres of Cornish countryside with barns, shepherd’s huts and rooms.”

Truro Farmers’ Market shared The Times’ story on Facebook, which garnered such comments as “You guys totally deserve the recognition for all the work you do to support our small Cornish producers” and “Such amazing news, well done to the whole team! Very well deserved”.

Producers who regularly sell on Lemon Quay include Tresemple Farm, Penny’s Pies, Goonown Growers, Halvasso Nursery, Driftwood Spars Brewery, Bosue Vineyard, TiramisUGO, Food of the Gods raw chocolate and many more.

The market has teamed up with Cornwall Shop Small its annual springtime extravaganza, The BIG Easter Market. The two-day event will take place on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, running from 9am to 4pm on both days. Expect a bountiful selection of seasonal food, drink, arts, crafts and vintage wares.
