Traffic police in North Yorkshire were engaged in a 90-mile-per-hour chase following a theft in Harrogate.

A group of men were seen driving late at night when traffic officers[1] Chris Storey and Tim Wilson were searching for a stolen car, as viewers were shown on the latest episode of Traffic Cops on Channel 5 tonight. The car in question was known for containing stolen catalytic converters after officers followed the car, this led to a very dangerous pursuit.

Millions of pounds worth of converters are stolen every year, sold on, and melted down for their precious metals. After noticing the car driving in a dangerous manner, police pulled up to the car to speak with the driver.

Noticing the police presence, the drivers then began a speedy getaway leading to a highly dangerous chase through Harrogate[3]. The car sped off reaching 90 miles per hour in 30mph zones weaving in and out of the small country lanes.

After cops found that the car contained one stolen converter, they upped the pursuit scrambling a police helicopter with traffic officer Tim on the ground. A stinger was placed in the road to deter the drivers, after a successful hit the car continued at speed continuing to drive at close to 100mph.

Speaking about the chase, Tim said: “ Whenever we are dealing with people like this, we know they won’t want to stop because they will likely have gear inside.

“They put everyone at risk, every person on the road is at risk.

“The last thing we want is for this vehicle to be involved in a collision and for someone to get hurt.”

The car stopped and the officers followed running after the perpetrator, a dog unit and helicopter were on the lookout for the missing driver and passengers. The police dog picked up a scent, with officers updating the helicopter crew to try and find one of the three men in nearby fields.

The dog found the man, with the dog handler warning that if he didn’t come out, the dog will go in and retrieve him with force, he was then arrested. Further up the road, officers searched car finding the stolen converter and noticing the vehicle was filled with large cutting equipment.

The man was put under arrest for burglary, interference with a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and further charges. Despite an extensive search, the other two men remained missing, and the arrested man remains under investigation.
