‘Lovable’ man died after he lost control of his car and crashed into tree

There was nothing that could be done to prevent a “kind, caring and loveable” young man from avoiding crashing into a tree after he lost control of his vehicle in Basildon last year, an inquest has heard. Jamie Kitching, 20, died from multiple injuries when his vehicle collided with a tree.

Mr Kitching was driving a black BMW vehicle on Cranes Farm Road in Basildon when he was involved in the crash on February 15 last year. The road was closed for several hours but, sadly, he could not be saved and died later in hospital.

His family previously paid tribute to him following his death. They described him as a “kind, caring and loveable young man”, who had an “infectious smile”. They added that he had an “endless” love for cars and could have conversations about them for the whole day.

Essex Coroners Court today (March 21) heard that Mr Kitching was driving in the left lane when he attempted to move into the right. He then tried to correct himself with an oversteer before losing control by spinning anti-clockwise, crossing onto a grass verge and eventually striking a tree.

The court heard that Mr Kitching was travelling at “an average of 55mph” based on a short piece of dash cam footage which captured the 20-year-old’s final movements. It was said: “Once the vehicle left the carriageway, Mr Kitching had no control of the car.”

A statement on behalf of the family read to the court said: “Jamie Kitching was a much loved son, brother, partner, cousin and nephew. He was a great friend to many. he had enormous amounts of love and respect for family and friends.

“His devotion to family and friends knew no bounds. He had always worn his heart on his sleeve and if he loved you, you most definitely knew this.”

They added: “Jamie’s aspirations were to settle down and have a family of his own. This to Jamie was the perfect life. In finding his partner, he found his soulmate and happily ever after.

“If Jamie loved you, he would share that with you. He could make someone’s bad day better just by smiling. He had a very positive outlook on life and if his family and friends were okay, he would be okay.

“Losing Jamie has had a massive impact on us which has been felt far and wide. He will be loved forever and missed always.”

Concluding the inquest, area coroner for Essex Sonia Hayes said: “It did not matter what level of driving ability he had, he was without option to not have an impact and very tragically there was nothing he could to avoid impact with the tree.”

Coroner Hayes added: “Jamie came from a loving, caring family. I can’t imagine the impact the loss of Jamie has had on you.” His cause of death was declared as 1A multiple injures due to 1B road traffic collision.
