The London roads near the edge of Kent that escape the ULEZ charge

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is set to expand across the city this summer. The extension of the zone, which Transport for London claims will clear air pollution and improve public health, will now encompass all London boroughs and will come into force from August 29 this year.

It means anyone driving within the zone, including the expanded area from that date, will face a daily charge of £12.50 if their vehicle does not meet emission standards. This includes people living in the ULEZ although they won’t have to pay the charge if they are parked inside the zone but don’t drive.

Meanwhile, the fee for non-compliant larger vehicles such as lorries, buses and coaches is £100 under the low emission zone scheme. ULEZ operates all day, every day, except Christmas Day.

It was launched as figures showed an estimated 4,000 Londoners die prematurely each year from conditions related to air pollution, and it has led to staunch opposition to the plans including a petition with more than 50,000 signatures calling for the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, to be sacked.
