Woking mental health hospital’s inspection rating upgraded by …

A mental health hospital in Woking has had its rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) upgraded. Cygnet Hospital Woking[1] now has an overall rating of ‘good’ after previously being graded ‘requires improvement’.

The CQC raised a number of concerns about Cygnet Hospital Woking following a routine inspection last April. These includes worries around the monitoring and management of medical equipment, while a report also said staff ‘did not ensure patients who were administered rapid tranquilisation were properly monitored’.

Inspectors returned unannounced on January 31. They spoke to workers as well as 10 patients on the hospital’s Picasso Ward.

Improvements were identified in the ‘safe’ and ‘well led’ categories required to pass a CQC check.

The new report said: “The service provided safe care. The ward environments were safe, clean and well furnished. The wards had enough nurses and doctors. Staff assessed and managed risk well. They analysed and minimised the use of restrictive practices through clinical governance, they managed medicines safely and followed good practice with respect to safeguarding.”

The report added: “Clinical rooms and clinical medical devices were well managed and physical health monitoring had significantly improved.”

The CQC also said: “Staff said the organisation promoted equality and diversity in daily work and provided opportunities for development and career progression. They could raise any concerns without fear.

“Leaders encouraged compassionate, inclusive and supportive relationships among staff. Leaders shared lessons learnt when something went wrong and told staff about any actions taken to prevent the same happening again.

“Staff spoke positively about working on the ward and said they were proud of the service, the team spirit amongst staff and the progress patients made. The ward was described as both challenging and rewarding but never boring.

“Staff reported good morale and were happy in their roles. We observed supportive and cohesive team working and the atmosphere appeared relaxed and encouraging.”

The hospital, on Redding Way, is run by Cygnet Health Care. It provides mental health services for men and women across four wards with a total of 57 beds.
