A fuel tanker exploded and killed its driver after a nearby car suffered a tire blowout and struck the back of the truck, toppling it as it crossed a Connecticut bridge.
The tragedy happened on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge in Groton Friday after the vehicle and its occupants rear-ended the tanker following the blowout.
It exploded in a huge fireball, killing the unidentified driver and closing the I-95.
The occupants of the car that struck the tanker were injured but survived, and have not been named.
Dramatic footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the bridge as the fire continued to burn. It took fire crews several hours to extinguish.
It crosses the Thames River and sits just a few thousand feet back from the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean.

Connecticut State Police also confirmed that there were buildings on fire below the bridge, with injuries being reported though it is unclear how severe they are.
Groton Mayor Keith Kedrick said the fire melted some of the guardrails, meaning engineers would have to come in and evaluate the southbound side of the bridge.
The Naval Submarine Base in New London sent its firefighters to help with the fire, but the blaze had no impact on the sub-base which remains open for normal operations.
