Boy died in motorbike crash after taking alcohol and cannabis …

An Essex teenager tragically died in a crash after riding a motorcycle that was not adapted for road use and consuming alcohol and cannabis, an inquest has concluded. Harley Griggs, 15, was killed in the crash in Rosebay Avenue, Billericay in the early hours of the morning of July 31 last year.

Emergency services were called to the scene of Harley’s crash at around 12.30am and he was treated at the scene. Tragically there was nothing that could be done for him and Harley was declared dead at the scene.

Following his death, dozens of tributes and flowers appeared at the scene of his death[1]. Harley’s name was written on a board, with Pepsi cans and packets of crisps also being left at the scene. A fundraiser was set up for his family which raised more than £8,000.

Now, an inquest has been held into his death and was heard at Essex Coroner’s Court on Wednesday (April 13). Area Coroner Sonia Hayes heard that Harley had died from multiple injuries sustained at the scene. It was also heard that Harley had consumed alcohol and taken cannabis before the crash.

Recording her conclusion of how, when and where Harley died, Coroner Hayes said: “Harley James Griggs died on 31 July 2022 of multiple traumatic injuries due to a vehicle collision on a background of alcohol intoxication and cannabis ingestion outside 220 Rosebay Avenue, Billericay whilst he was riding a motorcycle not adapted for road use.

“Harley Griggs sustained fatal injuries when he failed to negotiate a sweeping left-hand bend and collided with a lamppost.”

The coroner recorded a conclusion of a road traffic collision as the cause of Harley’s death.

The fundraiser for Harley’s family, set up by a friend, described him as a well-loved brother, and that he had recently become an uncle who “adored” his two nephews.
