Car crashes and overturns after driver tries to flee police
Two men have been hospitalised after a police chase in Hailsham[1] last night (April 20) that saw a car crash and overturn. The incident, which happened at around 8.40pm, began after two suspects were seen in a vehicle fleeing the scene of a shoplifting incident in South Road.
The police officers on patrol attempted to stop the vehicle however after a "short pursuit" found the car overturned in Ersham Road. Two men in the vehicle, a 44-year-old from Bexhill and a 41-year-old from Eastbourne, were taken to hospital with "minor injuries".
The 44-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of theft, dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving under the influence of drugs and failing to comply with an order to stop a moving vehicle. The 41-year-old was summonsed to court in relation to the theft.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police[3] said: "Police on patrol came across two suspects in a vehicle fleeing the scene of a shoplifting at a store in South Road, Hailsham, at around 8.40pm on Thursday (20 April). Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and, after a short pursuit, found it had been involved in a collision in Ersham Road.

"Two men – a 44-year-old from Bexhill[4] and a 41-year-old from Eastbourne[5] – were taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries. "The 41-year-old was summonsed to court in relation to the theft." Only one car was reported to have been involved in the crash.
