Cheddar Gorge driving route named one of the top 5 in the UK

The road through Cheddar Gorge in Somerset has been named as one of the top five roads in the UK by members of the public.

The route, which winds through the beauty spot, proved popular in a survey of 2,000 Brits by online electricals retailer AO for its breathtaking views and scenery.

Drivers also named the Atlantic Highway in Cornwall among the top five best roads for members of the public.

The other three roads to make the list were the A591 through the Lake District National Park, the A170 through the North Yorkshire Moors and the A82 from Glasgow to Fort William.

Also included in the survey were the five worst roads in the UK, which included the M6 from Birmingham to Manchester and the M25 around London, with both roads notorious for becoming gridlocked at peak times.

The five best roads in the UK, according to the survey, are:

  • A591 – Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
  • A170 – North Yorkshire Moors, England
  • A39 – The Atlantic Highway, Cornwall, England
  • A37 – Cheddar Gorge, Somerset, England
  • A82 – Glasgow to Fort William, Scotland

The five worst roads in the UK, according to the survey, are:

  • M25 – London, England
  • M6 – Birmingham to Manchester, England
  • M4 – London to South Wales, England/Wales
  • A406 – North Circular Road, London, England
  • A57 – Snake Pass, Peak District, England
