Cowabunga Pizza in Colchester closes doors for the final time as …

An independent pizziera in Essex has shut its doors for the final time citing “eyewatering” personal and business costs. Cowabunga Pizza in Colchester has ceased trading – with its owners moving onto new ventures.

The business, set up by brothers-in-law Tom Long and Tom Bell in 2018 in West Mersea, went from strength to strength over the years, riding out the Covid pandemic storm and moving premises from Mersea to East Hill in Colchester in 2021. However, in March this year, the duo called time on the venture, saying costs had risen and footfall had decreased.

In a statement today (April 1), the brothers thanked all their customers for the support after they had their last day of business on March 31. They said: “Goodbye friends! We’ve stretched our last base, sliced our last pizza, turned off the lights and locked the doors.

“Thank you to every single one of you that’s visited, sent a message or just supported us in any way over the last 4.5 years. There’s way too many of you to list but you all know who you are.

“The truth is that everything is a bit of a binfire and with massively reduced footfall, eyewatering business and personal costs, there just wasn’t a sustainable way to make it work in this climate. It’s tragic when you’ve got an amazing thing, but even the best can’t make magic.”

They previously said: “It’s been an incredible ride and we’ve loved every single minute of serving you. We made an incredible thing these last 4 years and we’re so very proud of everything we achieved.”
