Driver rescued from car caught in flood water near Tewkesbury Abbey

Motorists have been urged not to risk their lives (or their car) by driving into flood water. Heavy rain has left some roads under water in the wake of Storm Mathis which blasted over Gloucestershire on Thursday and into Friday, with more rain on Saturday morning as well.

On Saturday evening, a driver had to be rescued from their car from flood water to the rear of Tewkesbury Abbey. The car had gone into the flooded Ganders Lane.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews from Tewkesbury have been called to a car in flood water on Ganders Lane to the rear of Tewkesbury Abbey, please drive carefully and don’t enter flood water as it is not possible to know the depth, one driver released safely.”

It wasn’t the only car to get into difficulty after drivers risked going through flood water. There was also a car stuck in the water near the A417 at the Elkstone turn-off[2] on Saturday.

While the A419 Ebley Bypass is impassable due to flooding from Cotswold Way (the Leonard Stanley turn off) to B4008 (Horse Trough Roundabout).”

A Flood Warning was issued for Severn Ham at Tewkesbury by the Environment Agency on Saturday, meaning flooding is expected. Flood Alerts have also been issued for the River Severn in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.
