A MAN who attacked three police officers in a "disgraceful" assault has been jailed for three months.

Police had been called to Third Avenue, on Canvey Island, on Saturday, April 8, after reports of a drunk man swearing in the street.

When three officers approached John Terry, of Caledonian Road, London, he lashed out and assaulted them.

The officers weren't injured but the incident did leave them in shock.

Terry, 40, appeared before Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Monday (April 10) where he faced charges of two counts of assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty and three counts of assaulting an emergency worker.

He was also charged with one count of being drunk and disorderly.

When he appeared before magsitrates he admitted all the offences and was jailed for 12 weeks.

A spokesman from Essex Police said: "During an interview, Terry admitted he was very drunk when the officers approached him and his actions were not justified."

Sergeant Paul Restall said described the incident as "disgraceful" and welcomed the verdict which came just days after the offence.

Sgt Restall added: “Assaults on police officers are completely unacceptable.

"Officers come to work to help people and keep people safe, and they should not expect to face violence or the prospect of being assaulted.

“This incident highlights what officers face on a daily basis in order to keep people safe here and across the county.

“Support has been provided to the officers involved and I want to pay tribute to their professionalism.

“John Terry’s actions were disgraceful and I hope he uses his time in prison to reflect on his behaviour.”
