Essex locals devastated as town’s last bank closing down

Residents have described their Essex town losing their last banks as “horrendous”. Corringham used to have two banks and a post office, but will soon have nothing.

The town’s Barclays bank closed last year, and Lloyds will be closing this summer on August 21. And residents are already concerned about the effects it will have.

One resident, Carol, said: “We used to pop into the bank every five minutes”, but soon, it will require a bus or car journey to Stanford-le-Hope for any banking needs. Carol said it costs £4.50 for a return bus ticket, which is a big deterrent to travelling to go to the bank.

Carol added: “It’s a pain, a great deal of inconvenience.”

Emma, from Essex Flower Boutique, also pointed out the challenges of trying to get to the bank in Stanford. She said that the bank is only open during her working hours, which makes it almost impossible for her to go at all.

Another resident said the closure of the banks will be “horrendous”. She continued: “We all feel this sense of anxiety because of everything changing.”
