Five dead, 24 injured in ghastly Cross River accident
At least five persons have lost their lives in a ghastly accident involving a Mercedes Benz 911 tipper driving into Ogoja Township in Cross River State, Saturday afternoon.
The five persons, The Nation learnt, were among 26 other passengers inside the vehicle.
The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Maikano Hassan, confirmed that the accident was as a result of a tyre burst, which caused the driver to lose control and causing the vehicle to overturn with its four tyres facing the sky.
In addition to the five who died instantly, 24 others were seriously injured and they were all taken by men of the FRSC to the General Hospital in Ogoja.
Giving further breakdown, Hassan said there were a total of 31 persons in the truck, including the driver and they were all believed to be going for a burial programme in the town.
Twenty four persons sustained serious injuries, while two, being female and a child, were without any injury.
The sector commander said of the five corpses, relatives have taken two while three were taken along with the injured victims to Ogoja General Hospital.
Eyewitness alleged that the truck driver was on speed at the time of the accident which occurred along Abakpa Road in Ogoja township.
