Parts of Hampshire are expected to be braced with “strong winds” next week over a 24-hour period. With the county facing two separate weather warnings issued by The Met Office, windy weather is set to batter parts of the county from Tuesday afternoon (April 11) until Wednesday night (April 12).
In the first weather warning, which is in place from 3.00pm Tuesday afternoon until 6.00am Wednesday morning, areas including Portsmouth[1], Southampton[2], Winchester, Lyndhurst and the Isle of Wight.[3] During this period, “a spell of strong winds” is likely to bring disruption to the county.
A spokesperson for The Met Office said: “A developing area of low pressure running north through the Irish Sea is likely to bring a spell of strong winds, accompanied by some heavy rain, to parts of central and western England, Wales, southwest Scotland and the east of Northern Ireland. Gusts of 45-50 mph are possible inland and perhaps in excess of 60 mph for a time around some Irish Sea coastal areas.”
After this warning expires, coastal areas of Hampshire are then faced with another weather warning from 6am Wednesday until 11.59pm that same day. The Met Office said that areas such as Portsmouth and Southampton will see “a swathe of strong winds” which could cause disruption to travel and transport, as well as seafront areas.
The Met Office spokesperson said: “After a brief lull in winds through the early hours of Wednesday, west or northwest winds are expected to increase once more during Wednesday morning, then remain strong for much of the day. Gusts of 40-50 mph are expected widely within the warning area, but some coastal areas, especially in parts of southwest Wales and Cornwall, could see gusts above 60 mph at times. Outbreaks of heavy rain or showers will accompany the strong winds.”
During this weather, people are advised to avoid coastlines as large waves are to be expected. People are also advised to take care when travelling as disruption to road, rail and ferry travel is likely.
