Lucky escape for M6 driver as ‘mechanical fault’ sees car burst into …
Today motorists were confronted with the shell of a burned out car resting on the side of the M6.[1] The black car had been shoved to the side of the road, mostly disintegrated with its blackened engine hanging out. The bonnet and windscreen were both missing.
Fire crews were called to the blaze at around 6am today, April 3. The inferno is reported to be the result of a “mechanical failure” near Keele.
In a statement, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue said: “We were called to the slip road of junction 15 of the M6 northbound at 6am on Monday (3 April) following reports of a car fire.
“Crews from Longton and Newcastle attended as did Highways. On arrival, crews found a car well-alight. Two breathing apparatus and one hose reel were used to extinguish the fire.
“No-one was injured. The fire was deemed to be caused accidentally as a result of a mechanical failure. Crews left the scene at 6.50am.”
The fire follows more M6 chaos over the weekend, with it being closed for five hours this morning[3] between Junction 17 and 16 following a major crash.
Three cars, three vans and an HGV were involved in the crash. Drivers were warned about building congestion on the stretch, with measures being taken to release traffic.
