Machete-wielding suspects seen chasing crashed driver before fatal …

Residents said they saw masked thugs brandishing machetes chasing a man before a fatal stabbing in a Solihull[1] street. West Midlands Police[2] launched a murder probe after the horrific killing last night.

The victim, in his 50s, was believed to have been in a car which was rammed off the road by another vehicle[3] on Chester Road, Kingshurst[4], just after 8.15pm, yesterday, Tuesday, April 18. Locals said an off-duty nurse tried to save the victim.

But despite their best efforts, and those of the ambulance service, he was pronounced dead at the scene, on the border of Smith's Wood. Residents later described hearing a commotion when the victim's car crashed.

A 24-year-old, who asked not to be named, told BirminghamLive: "I heard the crash and saw three or four lads jump out of another car. They had machetes.

"They chased the man up the road and the car they were in was driven up towards them. It's all pretty crazy."

He added: "It's just senseless. In that moment a family have lost someone and the people responsible will end up in prison."

A blue forensic tent was set up at the scene. Bunches of flowers were left near to a tree at the police cordon.

A dog walker, who asked not to be named, told BirminghamLive: "I heard a massive bang and thought it was a wheelie bin falling over as it was windy yesterday. Then we saw the car that had crashed.

"Further up the road a nurse stopped to try to save the man. He was on his side in the road and then he was rolled over and given CPR. It's so sad - you don't expect something like this will happen."

In a statement, police said: "We've launched a murder investigation after a man was stabbed to death. We were called to Chester Road just before 8.15pm yesterday, April 18.

"A man in his 50s was found with serious injuries and sadly nothing could be done to save him. It's believed he had been travelling in a car which was rammed by another vehicle.

"He was then attacked by a number of people who then fled from the scene. We're carrying out extensive enquiries to establish exactly what happened and why and to identify those responsible."

Det Chief Insp Dave Sanders said: "We're supporting the man's family during this deeply distressing time. I'd like to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who was in the area at the time and may have dash cam footage to please get in touch. It could be vital to our investigation."
