Met Office issues Surrey weather warning with 45mph winds forecast
The Met Office has issued Surrey a yellow weather warning with a ‘swathe of strong winds’ forecast for Wednesday (April 12). It has alerted parts of the UK, including Surrey, that there is potential for disruption across travel services.
Gusts of wind as strong as 45 miles per hour could gale across Surrey[1] on Wednesday, April 12, peaking at 1pm. By 5pm gusts of wind as strong as 39 miles per hour are expected, and by 9pm gusts could lower to around 33 miles per hour.
Guildford[2] could see gusts of wind as strong as 47 miles per hour on Wednesday, with Woking[3] potentially experiencing gusts of 46 miles per hour. Redhill[4] will see even stronger gusts of 48 miles per hour, as will Staines[5], Farnham[6] and Haslemere[7].
Between 6am and 8pm there will likely be “some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport services” and “some bus and train services affected,” with “journeys taking longer” than expected, says the Met Office. High sided vehicles such as lorries and buses on exposed routes will most likely experience delays and will have to take caution on exposed routes.
There is a chance that there could be “loss of power and other services” due to winds picking up, as the Met Office advises people to stay safe by taking precautions at home and while out travelling. It is advised to check for loose objects, like garden[9] furniture, are secured down or stored away correctly before the strong winds hit. This includes tables, chairs, trampolines, plant pots and bins, for example.
If you are out and about during strong winds or are driving[10] in such conditions, it is advised to take the journey slowly to “minimise the impact” of strong gusts of wind. Try to avoid overtaking large vehicles like buses, lorries and caravans, says the Met Office. Hold onto the steering wheel properly with both hands and give other vehicles plenty of room.
