Police chase three runaway horses along busy A30 in Yeovil

Traffic was halted across Yeovil[1] on Bank Holiday Monday (April 10) as runaway horses were chased by police through the town. A group of three horses was loose on the A30 and travelled a significant distance before being brought under control after a 45-minute police pursuit.

Members of the public first spotted the runaway animals on the A30 between Yeovil and Sherborne at lunchtime. One person reported the horses were “running the wrong way down the dual-carriageway towards Yeovil”.

Police were quickly sent to the scene and discovered the animals near to the Babylon Hill shopping park on the edge of the town. Officers tailed the animals into Yeovil as they continued to travel along the A30 Reckleford past Yeovil Hospital before being brought under control near to the Tesco Extra supermarket.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “We received calls about three horses that were seen loose on the A30. The first call was received at 1.33pm from Dorset Police who informed us the animals were heading in the direction of Yeovil.

“Officers were dispatched and found the animals in the Babylon Hill roundabout area. To ensure the safety of the horses and road users, the animals were followed to the Queensway area where they were captured at approximately 2.15pm.

“The owner of the horses was identified and attended to collect them. Officers provided them with words of advice to try to prevent any similar incidents in future.”
