Poundland ‘disappointed’ as Derbyshire store to shut permanently

Poundland bosses say they are “disappointed” that a Derbyshire store will close its doors for the final time this month. The retailer is currently trading from The Pipeworks retail park in Swadlincote.

But the store, off Coppice Side in the town centre, will close on April 25. It has said it would have liked to have stayed but has been asked to leave the retail park by the landlords, reports StaffordshireLive[1].

A spokesperson for Poundland said: “We’re as disappointed as our colleagues and customers to be closing our store on April 25 in Swadlincote. We would have liked to stay, but the landlord has asked us to leave and we’re now looking at other options.

“Where we have to close a store, It goes without saying we always work hard to look after colleagues directly affected. We recently opened a brand new store in Burton which is a short drive away and in the meantime, we hope to welcome Swadlincote customers there.”

StaffordshireLive approached the landlords for comment. The Poundland closure comes after KFC revealed plans to move onto the retail park.

Last year a planning application was submitted that would subdivide two units currently occupied by Pep and Co and Poundland. It was understood Poundland will remain on site but that will no longer be the case.

A separate application was submitted earlier this year to increase the size of the current Home Bargains which will occupy the former JYSK unit and stretch across one entire side of the retail park until it meets Poundland. These plan have not yet been approved.

It comes just days after Burton’s Poundland moved to its new home outside Coopers Square shopping centre. The chain opened its first ever Poundland in The Octagon shopping centre in 1991.
