The M62 has been closed near Warrington after two lorries crashed, causing long delays and miles of congestion in the area.

National Highways has reported that the motorway is blocked westbound between junction 12 for the M60 and 11 for Birchwood. An image showed that two lorries were involved in the incident.

They have warned drivers that there are queues of around 3.5 miles on the carriageway with delays around 20 minutes ‘above the usual journey time’.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The M62 westbound between J12 (M60/M602) and J11 (Birchwood), traffic has been temporarily STOPPED due to a collision.

“There is currently approx. 3.5 miles of congestion on approach, causing delays of 20 minutes above usual journey times. We will keep you updated.”

An update on travel monitoring system Inrix also confirmed that two lorries were involved in the collision.

It said: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident, two lorries involved on M62 Westbound from J12 M60 J12 (Eccles Interchange) to J11 A574 Birchwood Way (Birchwood).”
