Tractor-trailer crash spills chemicals near Monongahela River …
A tractor-trailer crashed early Monday morning along Bellbridge Road in Lincoln, officials from Allegheny County said.
In a release, officials said 911 received a call from the driver of the truck just after 1 a.m. saying his tractor-trailer left the road and went into a ravine in the woods near the bottom of Bellbridge Road. The roadway winds down a hill that connects Liberty Way and Lincoln Boulevard.
Local police, fire and EMS were dispatched to the scene, arriving at 1:13 a.m. The driver was pulled from the cab and told responders that his truck’s brakes had given out.
The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Officials said the truck was hauling 55-gallon drums of a two-part epoxy chemical, some of which were found to be leaking into a nearby stream, which flows into the Monongahela River. The saddle tanks of the truck were also found to be leaking diesel into the stream. An Allegheny County Hazardous Materials team was called to the scene and set up collection dams to gather the leaking chemicals.
Officials said the chemicals present no air or fire hazards.
Bellbridge Road was closed from Lincoln Boulevard/Route 51 to Lincoln Way.
