Up to 2000 runners due to take part in Boston Marathon
Up to 2,000 runners from across the UK and as far afield as Europe, the USA and China are participating in the Boston[1] UK Marathon on Sunday, April 16. The event comprises a full 26.2-mile marathon, a half marathon 10K and a 5K fun run.
The marathon starts in the Market Place at 8am, the half at 8.30am and then the newly introduced 10K and 5K fun run start from the Central Park Gates at 9am and 9.30am. A spokesperson for the event said: “It is quite a spectacle watching the participants assemble and line up to the start in the Market Place and the participants sure do love a cheerful and supporting crowd.
“Our friendly spectators and marshals are one of the memories runners take away with them and factors into their decisions to return in future years. The 26.2-mile course is certified and is becoming recognised as being the flattest UK marathon. Many runners achieve personal bests and can use their Boston finish time to qualify for larger events such as the London Marathon and a number of elite runners take part for that reason.
Poll – Are you worried about the RAF asylum seekers plans?[2]
“The Boston UK marathon came 11th in a survey for fastest UK marathons and is making headlines in the running world. It’s the community spirit which brings the event alive and local people are encouraged to become involved by marshalling the course. It’s a fun day, there is a carnival atmosphere, marshals can dress up and enter a competition for cash prizes.
“Runners are asked to vote for their favourite, most memorable water station and junction marshals.” Spectators are welcome at the start and finish and while there are great viewing spots around the course, spectators are politely asked to approach it from the A52 and avoid driving on the route.
Maps and information can be found on www.bostonmarathon.co.uk[3] Boston Seeds is the main prize sponsor, Drayton Motors provide three lead cars and pay for the fun run bibs, George Kime Transport sponsors the new 10K prize money and transports water bottles to the 13 stations en route and Boston College hosts the finish line.
As a voluntary, not for profit organisation the Boston Marathon Association says it is grateful for their continued support.
