Van driver refuses to move for workers resurfacing road so they work …

A van[1] driver who failed to move his vehicle caused a headache for workers trying to resurface the road[2].

Rather than abandon the job, they decided to work round it – meaning a van-sized patch of road was left without the improvement.

The new surface was laid in Cranleigh Road, Worthing, West Sussex.

But the van means contractors will have to return in mid-June to finish the job.

One resident who asked to remain anonymous said: “I think it’s quite funny really. Adds a bit of extra character to the street, doesn’t it?”

But others were annoyed, pointing out that there was plenty of warning that people should move their vehicles ahead of the work.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex County Council said large-scale roadworks depend on co-operation from drivers.

“To aid with this, works information and ‘no parking’ signs are erected on site and information letters are delivered to local residents and businesses in advance of the works,” she said.

“Despite these efforts, we do occasionally encounter vehicles which haven’t been moved.

“As we do not have the authority to physically remove these vehicles, the options are to either abandon the works or work around the obstruction, with the latter almost always being the option taken as is the case here.”
