Well wishes pour in for former Hull Lord Mayor Steve Wilson after …

People have sent well wishes to a former Hull Lord Mayor who has been hospitalised with brain damage following a stroke.

Cllr Steve Wilson, Hull’s lord mayor from 2019 to 2020, said he remained in Hull Royal Infirmary[1] today (Tuesday, April 11) following the stroke. The former Lord Mayor said on Twitter that it had left him with some brain damage but did not discuss his condition further.

The news has prompted well wishes from people across Hull, including those who serve on Hull City Council[2] with the Cllr Wilson, Labour’s[3] member for University ward. Liberal Democrat[4] council Leader Cllr Mike Ross said: “Really sorry to hear this, I hope you are getting all the care and treatment you need.”

Labour’s[6] Cllr Lynn Petrini, who served as Hull’s lord mayor from 2020 to 22 after Cllr Wilson, said: “Sorry to hear this Steve, wishing you a speedy recovery, rest and take care.” Liberal Democrat Cllr Holly Burton, fellow member for University ward, said: “I’m sorry to hear this Steve, I wish you a swift and full recovery, get well soon.”

The former chief of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Chris Blacksell, said: “So sorry to hear this Steve. Hope you have a quick and full recovery.”

Cllr Steve Wilson served as Hull’s Lord Mayor from 2019 to 2020

Cllr Wilson was first elected to Hull City Council in 1995. He has served on the authority’s Economy and Regeneration, Health and Social Wellbeing and People and Communities Overview and Scrutiny Commissions.

Cllr Wilson was deputy chair of North Area Committee and he also chaired the Civic Committee. He became the city’s 107th Lord Mayor and Admiral of the Humber following a ceremony in Hull’s Guildhall in May 2019.

He and his husband Karl Hudder were the first same-sex couple to hold office as Lord Mayor and Lord Mayor’s Consort respectively. Cllr Wilson said at the time it sent a positive message that another glass ceiling had been broken and that Hull was moving with the times.

He visited Hull’s twin city of Freetown in Sierra Leone and undertake almost 600 civic engagements during his time in office made unusually long by the coronavirus pandemic. His chosen charities while in office were the Hull Bullnose Heritage Group, Ganton School and Age Concern.

Cllr Wilson continues to serve as Labour ‘s councillor for University ward. He also runs the Former Lord Mayor of Kingston Upon Hull Twitter account where he posts about the city’s history.
