Woman and child injured after two-car crash on notorious A5 junction

A woman and child were injured in a two-car crash at a notorious junction on the A5[1] this week. The incident happened at the junction with Woodford Lane, close to Fenny Drayton and Higham on the Hill, near Hinckley[2], around 5.30pm on Monday, (April 3).

The West Midlands Ambulance Service said the woman and child were in one of the cars and needed medical support at the scene before being taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. A WMAS spokesperson told CoventryLive[3]: “Two ambulances were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews discovered two cars had been involved in a collision.

“One female patient, a child, was treated for injuries not thought to be serious by ambulance staff before being taken to University Hospital Coventry for further treatment.”

The junction is well known for being an crash hotspot, with National Highways looking to make the road safer by installing a roundabout there. However, a timetable for the plans has not been set, and National Highways said earlier this year that they are in talks with Warwickshire County Council over the possibility of a joint safety improvement scheme.

Greg Payne, safety engineering team leader for National Highways, has now given a progress report on the proposed safety improvements. He said: “We are aware of concerns about the A5/Woodford Lane junction and have carried out a thorough safety review of the location.

“Though we will not be undertaking any additional works at this time, we are currently working with Warwickshire County Council to determine if a joint safety improvement scheme can be identified. Consideration may be given in the future, as part of improvements to the A5 between the M42 and M69, to installing a roundabout at the junction but these discussions are in the very early stages.”
