A1 crash leaves lorry driver dead after vehicle left road and hit RAF Wittering’s fence
A lorry driver has died after his vehicle left a major Cambridgeshire road and hit the perimeter fence of an RAF base. Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway of the A1 near the Townsend Road junction for Wittering at around 3.20pm on Sunday (May 28).
An articulated HGV had left the road and hit the fence of RAF Wittering. The driver, a man in his 40s from Kettering in Northamptonshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cambridgeshire Police[1] said no other people or vehicles[2] were involved in the crash. Officers are now urging anyone with information to contact the force.
Sergeant Mark Atkins, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: “The HGV lorry driver has sadly lost his life and my thoughts are with him and his loved ones. I would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the lorry before it left the road or has dashcam footage.
“Anyone with information should report it[4] on the force website using reference 35/39538/23. Anyone without internet access should call 101.”
