Cops: Search for driver who hit cop, cars in Malverne, fled
Nassau police continued the search Monday for a driver they said fled after striking two police cars and a Malverne police officer during a traffic stop in which “multiple shots were fired.”
Police said Malverne officers approached a black BMW M3 sedan about 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon with the intent to arrest the driver for fleeing the scene of a traffic stop earlier in the day.
The driver then “intentionally struck the Police car striking the Officer,” on the corner of Mahopac Road and Scaneateles Avenue in Lakeview, Nassau County police said in a news release.
The BMW then crashed into a second police car and the driver “intentionally drove toward that Officer who was outside of that vehicle,” Nassau Police said. “Multiple shots were fired during this encounter and the BMW was able to flee the scene.”
Police did not say who fired the gunshots but no one was hit.
Both officers were transported to hospitals for treatment of unspecified injuries and released, police said.
The BMW was later recovered in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
The incident is being investigated by the Nassau County Homicide Squad, which who did not release any updates Monday on efforts to track down the driver.
