The Westlake Police Department at 11 p.m. on May 23 received multiple calls reporting a car crash on I-90 near Crocker Road.

Callers reported multiple injuries, and one vehicle was smoking. Two cars were involved, and one of them struck the center guardrail.

The female driver of a Honda Accord was traveling at a high rate of speed before striking another vehicle from behind, according to a police press release. The 33-year-old woman appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, police said. She, along with the occupants of the second car, went to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police charged the woman who struck the other vehicle with OVI, failure to maintain assured clear distance, and failure to wear a seatbelt. She refused a chemical test.

Inducing panic: Crocker Park

Officers on May 16 responded to Crocker Park after an employee of a business on Crocker Park Boulevard reported what appeared to be a road rage incident.

The concerned caller heard the driver of a black truck “laying on” the horn and saw him “cocking” a pistol inside the vehicle while screaming obscenities out the window.

The truck had moved on when officers arrived, but police officers used surveillance cameras and license plate readers in the area to identify a suspect. The 52-year-old Crocker Park resident was questioned and admitted to becoming angry because another driver had stopped in the roadway and was blocking traffic. The suspect eventually explained that he had raised his pepper-ball gun in a fit of anger at the situation, according to a police press release. Witness statements from several people indicated the man had pulled the slide on the firearm and pointed it at other drivers during the incident.

Charges of inducing panic were filed in Rocky River Municipal Court.

OVI and weapon charge: I-90

The Cleveland Metroparks Police Department at 2 a.m. on May 22 informed the Westlake Police Department about a vehicle stopped on I-90 near Columbia Road.

A Metroparks officer had received a report that the suspect vehicle had almost struck a truck.

Westlake officers noted that the driver appeared intoxicated, had an empty bottle of wine on the vehicle’s front floorboard, and was only wearing one shoe and no shirt. Officers administered field sobriety tests and then arrested the 26-year-old Cleveland resident for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The man refused a breath test. After officers found a loaded gun in the vehicle, they added a charge for possession of a weapon while intoxicated.

SUV theft: Hilliard Boulevard

Police officers at 8:30 p.m. on May 24 responded to the Westlake Recreation Center, where a caller said someone stole their keys from inside the building and then drove off in their Subaru SUV.

By 9:45 p.m., the Subaru was recovered unoccupied in the parking lot of Walmart in South Euclid. Investigators are reviewing surveillance from the recreation center and Walmart.
