Driver ‘critical’ in hospital as emergency services descend on Tunstall smash

A motorist remains in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a ‘medical incident’ before a crash. Police, paramedics and firefighters were scrambled to Wesley Street in Tunstall[1] to reports of a collision on Saturday.

They discovered a Mini Cooper had crashed into a stationary and unoccupied Mercedes. Paramedics believe the Mini driver, a man in his 70s, had suffered a ‘medical incident’.

The alarm had been raised just before 1.50pm on Saturday. Three ambulances, a paramedic officer and the air ambulance critical care car attended. A spokeswoman said: “Upon arrival ambulance staff found a man and a woman from the car.

“The driver, a man who is believed to have suffered a medical incident at the wheel, received advanced life support from ambulance staff which continued en route to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

“The passenger, a woman was assessed and had non-life threatening injuries. She received treatment at the scene and was conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital.[3]

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police[4] said: “We went to the scene with colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service[5], West Midlands Ambulance Service[6] and the air ambulance.

“A Mini Cooper was found in collision with a stationary and empty Mercedes Benz. A man, in his 70s, was taken to hospital for treatment after paramedics confirmed he had experienced a medical episode prior to the collision.

“He remains in a critical condition in hospital. Inquiries are continuing.”
