Emergency services were called to clear up a chemical spill which had leaked into a car park. Local witnesses reported seeing fire engines and police vehicles in a Tesco car park in Blandford St Mary on Friday afternoon (May 26).

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service told DorsetLive crews were called to reports of a chemical spill in a car park at Stour Park, Blandford St Mary at 11.36am. Photos seen by DorsetLive show police tape blocking part of the car park, with several fire engines at the scene.

Two crews from Poole and one environmental protection unit from Gillingham were sent for clear up. A spokesperson for Dorset Police confirmed officers were in attendance.

Witnesses said the car park had been "closed by police" with reports of a "van leaking chemicals" in the car park. Tesco confirmed the store opened after a "brief closure".

A statement from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 11.36am this morning about an incident involving a chemical spill in a car park at Stour Park, Blandford St Mary. Two crews from Poole and environmental protection unit from Gillingham attended the incident.

"Breathing apparatus wearers contained the spill and made the area safe. Our stop came in at 1.13pm."

A Tesco spokesperson said at around 5.30pm: “Our Blandford Forum Superstore is open as normal after a brief closure earlier today. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank the local police and fire service for their help."
