Violent racist thief rammed car into love rival sending him flying into a hedge
A violent, racist car thief rammed his car into another man who had been contacting his girlfriend sending him flying into a hedge. The dramatic confrontation was just one of a slew of crimes which saw Robert Durning Allen brought before Leicester Crown Court.
Durning Allen was driving in Stephenson Drive, Newfoundpool[1], Leicester, when he spotted his victim walking along the pavement. He pulled over to speak to the man through the window of his Vauxhall Astra.
The man ran off and Durning Allen pursued, catching up with him in nearby Swannington Road, where During Allen lives, and mounted the pavement to ram into him, propelling him into a nearby shrubbery. That incident happened on March 18, 2021 and it was one of 11 crimes he has now been jailed for.
Six months earlier, on September 10, 2020, Durning Allen got into a row with workers in a shop in Leicester’s Tudor Road. He left to fetch a baseball bat from his car and when he returned, Durning Allen smashed at the front door of the shop while the staff barricaded themselves inside.
In another incident on October 23, 2020, Durning Allen was member of a gang of people wearing face-coverings and armed with with weapons who had gathered outside a house in Radford Drive, Braunstone Town[3], damaging the house and a vehicle outside before Leicestershire Police[4] arrived and the crowd dispersed.
Durning Allen, 23, who already had 35 previous offences on his record, also faced numerous other more recent charges when he appeared at Leicester Crown Court[5] on Friday:
- On March 21, 2022 he was driving a van and police tried to stop him but he fled, swerving over the road and led the police on a chase from Cossington to the Hobby Horse Roundabout near Syston[6]
- On August 21, 2022, he burgled a house in Glenmore Avenue, Shepshed[7] to steal the keys to an A-Class Mercedes worth about £20,000 – he and the others involved filmed themselves speeding around in the car after the burglary
- Two days later on August 23, 2022, he burgled a house in Barnes Close, Shepshed, taking a 2018 BMW and on the same day jointly burgled a house in Mallard Way, Shepshed, and stole a wallet and car keys to and Audi A4 and a BMW, which were then driven off
- On November 24, 2022, after being arrested he smashed up a police interview room, damaging a video system and yelled racial abuse at an Asian man walking past the room.
Overall, he admitted two burglaries, three counts of theft, criminal damage, possessing an offensive weapon, affray, actual bodily harm, two counts of dangerous driving and one of racial harassment. Steven Newcombe, representing Durning Allen, said his client “did not have a particularly happy upbringing” and now faced a choice between an “unhappy criminal career” or changing his ways.
Durning Allen was jailed for four years and three months at the sentencing hearing, where he appeared alongside three co-defendants who had been involved in some of his crimes. One of the three – Kian Payne, 18, of Longcliffe Road, Humberstone, Leicester – was jailed for 12 months, having been involved in the burglary in Glenmore Avenue.
He also admitted charges of driving whilst disqualified, having no insurance and handling stolen goods. His barrister, Michelle Harding, said he was 17 at the time and his family had been split up when he was just 15 when they lost their home, leaving him sofa-surfing.
Daniel Bateman, 26, of Chapel Green, Leicester Forest East, and Ciara Newcrews, 24, of Holmfield Avenue East, Braunstone Town, were each given 18-month sentences, suspended for two years, having pleaded guilty to being involved in the affray outside the house in Braunstone Town in October 2020.
Barristers for the pair said they had both become parents since the incident two-and-a-half years ago and both had jobs. Bateman, a landscape gardener, was ordered to pay £500 compensation to the owners of the house in Radford Drive and Newcrews was ordered to pay £300.
During Allen also received a three-year driving ban from his date of release, while Payne received a one-year ban.
