42-year-old Lakeland man on bicycle killed in hit-and-run on US 98 South

LAKELAND ― A 42-year-old man was killed in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Lakeland early Sunday morning.

In a Monday afternoon news release, Lakeland police said officers responded to the 3000 block of Bartow Road for a hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist about 2 a.m. Sunday. Officers found an unresponsive man who had been struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lakeland Police Department declined to identify the deceased man, citing Marsy’s Law, a state law designed to protect victims of crime from being located or harassed.

LPD said it appeared the man was struck while crossing the southbound lanes of Bartow Road. Witnesses at the scene described the suspect’s vehicle as small and gray, according to police. The vehicle was traveling south on Bartow Road when it hit the bicyclist, and it fled south after the crash.

Police received a call from Polk County Sheriff’s Office, which received a call about a possible suspect vehicle at a Winter Haven residence. Police responded to the scene with assistance from Winter Haven Police Department and found a vehicle matching the description and with damage consistent with the crash. The vehicle was impounded and police conducted additional interviews in Winter Haven.
