A5 crash: Two men fight for life and third in hospital
Two men are fighting for their lives and third is in hospital following a major crash on the A5. The rush-hour collision took place has taken place around the Halton and Gledrid Roundabouts that links the A5 and the A483 between Wrexham[1] and Oswestry on the border with England.
The head-on crash involved a car and a van and the road was closed at the Chirk Retail Park McDonald’s, towards the Dobbies Garden Centre on Moreton Park to allow the medical teams from West Midlands and two Wales Air Ambulance helicopters to land on the road.[2]
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said that two of the three men involved sustained “life-threatening” injuries. Police and the Oswestry Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene of the accident.
An ambulance service spokesperson aid: “[The driver of the car] was assessed and had sustained life-threatening injuries. He received advanced trauma care at the scene. He was conveyed to Royal Stoke Hospital by the Welsh Air Ambulance.”
“The second was the driver of the van. He was assessed and had sustained potentially life-threatening injuries. He received treatment from ambulance staff at the scene. He was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by air ambulance for further treatment.”

The third man was a passenger in the car and sustained serious injuries that were not deemed to be life threatening. He received treatment at the scene and was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by land ambulance for further assessment.
Fire service crews from Oswestry, Wrexham and Chirk were deployed. An Oswestry fire station spokesperson said firefighters managed to free two of the men that were trapped in separate vehicles and send them off to hospital via air ambulance for further medical attention.
The third man was able to get himself out of the car before the emergency crews arrived. The road has been closed for around five hours – to allow police to complete their accident investigation work.
A police spokesman said: “Investigating officers would like to appeal for any witnesses to the collision to come forward or anyone who was passing through the area around the time of the collision who may have dash-cam footage. The crash resulted in delays on the roads throughout the morning, and into the afternoon, between the A483 (Halton Roundabout) to B5070 Chirk Road (Gledrid Roundabout). There was heavy congestion in Chirk, where traffic was diverted.
