Community in shock after stabbing in Gilesgate, Durham

One person has been taken to hospital following a stabbing shortly before 5pm on Sunderland Road, Gilesgate in Durham yesterday (June 13).

Durham Police have confirmed a woman, 43, has been arrested in connection with the incident, and remains in police custody.

Residents have described the scene of the incident yesterday as emergency service vehicles converged on the street outside Old Cinema Launderette on Sunderland Road.

The Northern Echo:

One resident on the street said: “I just heard some girls shouting at each other. Sometimes that happens, I usually ignore it.

“I heard loads of police cars coming round, and then I looked outside and saw [it].

“Nothing like that [has happened before], not like that.

“I’ve never seen something like that in my life.”

The woman suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital where she remains receiving treatment. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Armed police, paramedics, fire crews and the air ambulance were all present at the scene yesterday, while eyewitnesses said a cordon had been put in place on the street.

Police have confirmed they attended a laundrette on nearby Marshall Terrace after reports a woman had been stabbed in the premises.

Another shocked resident said while they had not seen anything, they did hear shouting from their back garden.

They said: “When we went outside, there were people already gathering here.

“It was just like shouting, we thought it was the kids playing around, it wasn’t that loud.

“Then we heard, I think, police first, then one and then another, but we didn’t see anything.

“It’s not so common.”

Officers remain at the scene while enquiries are ongoing, with a police van and car present on the road.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward to assist their investigation.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: “Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information that could assist officers with their investigation, is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 366 of June 13.”
