Police and other emergency services remain at the scene, where traffice has been halted in both directions.

A police spokesman said: “We are currently at the scene of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian in Canterbury Road, Westgate.

“Kent Police was called just after 12pm – South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are also at the scene.”

A spokesman from the college confirmed it was not one of their pupils involved in the crash.

Eye-witnesses said on social media the “horrendous” crash involved a car hitting a speed camera.

The accident is understood to have happened on the westbound side of the road, while the A28 is closed from Minster Road to Epple Road, according to the Inrix traffic website.

Meanwhile, the school has notified parents the road could be closed for a significant amount of time and to make alternative arrangements to pick up their children.
