Crossover crash on I-80 injures 4, snarls traffic

Four people were hurt in a crash on Interstate 80[1] in Montville on Saturday afternoon, two of them seriously, when a car headed west crossed the median and collided with two other vehicles near the border of Essex and Morris counties, police said.

The eastbound side of the major interstate was reduced to a single lane for more than three hours in the direction of the George Washington Bridge Saturday afternoon, causing extensive delays, the New Jersey State Police[2] said on Sunday.

The driver of the westbound car, a 26-year-old Elmwood Park woman, and an 18-year-old Paterson woman riding with her, were ejected and suffered serious injuries in the 1:59 p.m. crash, the State Police said.

One of them was airlifted by State Police helicopter to Morristown Medical Center, said Chief Anthony Manna of the Fairfield Township Police Department, which assisted in the nearby crash.

The State Police said the westbound car, a Toyota Avalon, crossed into the highway’s center divider, at milepost 48.3, jumped the guardrail and entered the eastbound lanes. The car struck the left rear end of an box truck and was then struck by a minivan, both headed east, police said.

The drivers of truck and minivan suffered minor injuries, and were treated at local hospitals, police said. The crash remained under investigation Sunday.
